چکیده

Adult Lygus hesperus Knight (Hemiptera: Miridae), major crop pests of the southwesternUnitedStates, canmate repeatedlyduring their lives, potentiallyenhancing the lifetimeÞtness ofboth sexes. However, theperiodicityofmating and its regulation in this species is poorlyunderstood. In this study the postmating refractory period for both sexes is described. Males were found to have a median delay of 24 h, which seems to be the minimum time needed to reÞll the accessory glands and produce another viably sized spermatophore. Themedian refractory period inmated females was 5 d, but sometimes lasted longer than 2 wk. The loss of sexual receptivity in mated females, at least for the Þrst 24 h, seems to be induced by males; spermatophore homogenates injected directly into the abdomen of virgin females reduced their sexual receptivity. The total duration of female refractoriness may be dictated by the starting size of a spermatophore and the rate at which it degrades.

Tarnished plant bug (Hemiptera: Miridae) thresholds and sampling comparisons for flowering cotton in the midsouthern United States.

The tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois) (Hemiptera: Miridae), has become the primary target of foliar insecticides in cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., throughout the Midsouth over the past several years. This prompted a reevaluation of existing action thresholds for flowering cotton under current production practices and economics. A trial was conducted at 19 locations thr...

Comparison of direct and indirect sampling methods for tarnished plant bug (Hemiptera: Miridae) in flowering cotton.

A complex of hemipterans, especially the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois) (Hemiptera: Miridae), has become a major target of insecticides in flowering cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., in the mid-southern United States. Sampling protocols for this complex during this period of cotton development are poorly established, resulting in uncertainty about when infestations war...

Expressed sequenced tags from Lygus lineolaris (Hemiptera: Miridae), the tarnished plant bug.

Expressed sequenced tags (ESTs) were prepared to establish a baseline for molecular genetic studies of the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois). The largest class of identifiable ESTs (15.2%) was from genes involved in cellular metabolic functions, including physiological processes. Twenty-seven ESTs (9.8%) were from genes associated with transcription and translation, in...

Characterization of microsatellite loci in the western tarnished plant bug, Lygus hesperus Knight (Hemiptera: Miridae)

A microsatellite-enriched partial genomic DNA library of Lygus hesperus was generated and screened by sequencing. Ten polymorphic microsatellite marker loci were characterized by genotyping 92 insect samples. The observed number of alleles ranged from three to seven with an average of 4.5 (SE ± 0.45), while the effective number of alleles ranged from 1.21 to 3.02 with an average of 2.14 (SE ± 0...

Instar- and Stage-Specific Photoperiodic Diapause Response of Lygus hesperus (Hemiptera: Miridae)

The western tarnished plant bug (Lygus hesperus Knight) (Hemiptera: Miridae) is a polyphagous pest of numerous western crops. This pest overwinters in a relatively short duration adult diapause, but many details regarding diapause induction and maintenance remain unstudied. Instar-specific responses to a switch from short (10-h) to long (14-h) days, long to short days, and a temporary (4-d) swi...
